Slow the Shelter Flow

Keeping pets and people together.

Slow the Shelter Flow is a pet retention initiative built on a straightforward belief: most pets that end up in shelters didn't have to get there. With the right support, resources, and information — accessed early enough — many surrenders can be prevented.

Shelters across the country are overwhelmed. The animals filling those kennels are not all strays or neglected pets — many of them came from homes where someone loved them but ran out of options, or felt they had no other choice. Financial hardship, behavioral challenges, life changes, household conflict, and simple lack of support are among the most common reasons pets are relinquished. Most of those reasons are addressable — if help is available before the situation reaches a breaking point.

Slow the Shelter Flow focuses on two things: helping people make informed, thoughtful decisions before bringing a pet home, and providing real support to pet owners who are struggling after the pet is already part of the family. Both matter. Both reduce the number of animals entering shelters unnecessarily.

Are you struggling to keep your pet?

Nobody brings a pet home planning to give it up. But life happens — jobs change, health fails, living situations shift, money gets tight, or the household falls apart for a while. If you're here because you're worried about your pet's future, you're doing the right thing by looking for options before making a decision you can't undo.

In many cases, there are options. The earlier you look, the better your chances of finding one that works. Choose the situation that fits closest to yours — each one will take you to a page with real guidance, practical ideas, and next steps.

A reminder before you decide anything

Needing help doesn't mean you've failed your pet. Plenty of responsible, loving pet owners hit walls they didn't see coming. Asking questions and looking for options — that is taking care of your pet.

Some situations can be turned around with the right support. Others are genuinely hard, and there may not be a perfect answer. Either way, these resources are here to help you think it through clearly — without judgment, and without pressure.

If your pet's health or safety is at immediate risk, please reach out to a local veterinarian or animal welfare organization right away. You can also find pet retention resources at Homeward Pet Adoption Center.
