Commitment to the Potential Pet
Commitment is the cornerstone of any successful pet relationship
According to Webster's New World College Dictionary, commitment means a "Dedication to a long-term course of action, engagement, involvement" and "a pledge or promise to do something." These definitions accurately describe what a potential new pet owner should seriously consider before they ever bring home any type of pet. There is much to think about before ever bringing in a pet. A commitment to a pet not only includes taking care of it for its entire lifetime, it also means that the owner will ensure that the home environment is suitable for the pet to live in comfort, and that his care is never neglected, forgotten or pushed to the side. Making sure that the pet is given appropriate food, exercise, training and quality attention is very important. Depending on the type of pet that you choose, this can be anywhere between one year to over 40. Some pets may easily outlive their owner. Knowing ahead of time what is expected for the lifelong care of the pet is essential. This makes it much easier to develop long-term plans and be prepared for most events during the lifetime of the pet.
Potential new pet owners should ask themselves the following questions:
- Are you willing to dedicate the expected length of time to care for your chosen pet?
- What plans do you have for your immediate and long term future?
- Is "now" an appropriate time to bring in a pet and care for it?
- Do you have the time on a daily basis to care for the pet?
- Have you considered how the pet will affect your free time activities?
- Are you willing to dedicate the time necessary for training and exercise of the pet?
- Are you willing to keep the pet's environment clean on a regular basis?
- If the pet develops any health or temperament issues, are you willing to do whatever is necessary to help the pet?
Taking the time to consider and answer these questions honestly will go far in providing a quality home for your pet, and to the potential of developing a close and fulfilling relationship with your pet.
