It’s DogGone Awesome was created with one central purpose: to help reduce preventable pet relinquishment by giving pet owners practical information, planning tools, and resources that can help them care for their animals throughout their lives. We believe that true pet well-being starts with intentional choices and people who take on the serious responsibility of selecting the right type of pet for their life and making a lifelong commitment to their care.
Pet owners relinquish, rehome, or abandon their pets for many reasons. Some were not prepared for the responsibility of caring for a pet, especially when the animal is young and still learning. Others may face medical issues, housing upheaval, behavioral or training challenges, natural disasters, or an incompatibility they did not recognize before bringing the pet home. When owners receive helpful information before a problem becomes a crisis, more animals may have the opportunity to remain safe and loved at home.
Keeping pets safe, healthy, and with the people who love them takes informed pet owners, practical resources, responsible decisions, and trusted community partners. Shelters, rescues, veterinary teams, trainers, behaviorists, emergency management agencies, and other organizations each contribute valuable knowledge and support. By working together, we can reach pet owners before small challenges become crises and share resources, education, and preparedness tools that make lifelong commitment more sustainable.
OUR MISSION
Through our Slow the Shelter Flow campaign, It’s DogGone Awesome is working toward an ambitious long-term goal: shelters and rescues operating at only 20% capacity by 2035.
This goal cannot be accomplished by one entity. It’s DogGone Awesome looks forward to collaborating with shelters, rescues, veterinarians, trainers, pet behaviorists, and other organizations that share this purpose.
To help achieve that goal, It’s DogGone Awesome is creating practical educational resources and products to help people make thoughtful decisions, build successful relationships with their pets, prepare for emergencies, and navigate the responsibilities of pet ownership with as little friction as possible. Whether a pet is adopted, purchased from a responsible breeder, or acquired from another responsible source, what matters is making an informed decision that leads to the right type of pet for the person or family and a commitment to that animal’s lifelong care.
WHY COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS MATTER
Different organizations see different parts of the challenges pet owners face. Each has a valuable role in helping people choose the right pet, prepare for the responsibility, and keep that pet through difficult circumstances.
For instance, a veterinarian may recognize when a family needs help managing its pet’s medical expenses. A trainer or behaviorist may learn that a family is struggling with a pet’s behavior or temperament and help develop practical ways to address those challenges. Shelters and rescues can help adopters make thoughtful choices and support them throughout their journey as pet owners. Emergency management agencies can teach residents why animals must be included in evacuation plans and provide training to help them prepare. Pet supply businesses often speak directly with local pet owners and learn about their challenges and concerns. Libraries, schools, community and senior centers, and disability organizations can make important information about responsible pet ownership more accessible.

Each profession brings valuable knowledge to the table, and our combined efforts can help reduce the number of animals entering shelters and rescues, being rehomed into inappropriate situations, or being abandoned.
